Criado na igreja pela tia, Kirk Franklin aprendeu piano aos quatro anos de idade e aos onze anos já liderava o coral adulto da Mt. Rose Baptist Church. Kirk Franklin teve uma infância e juventude premiada, mas sua carreira foi, desde cedo, cercada por rebeliões de gangs de adolescentes. Sacudido nas brechas da sua igreja, Franklin começou a visualizar um som que fundisse o Gospel tradicional com R&B, rock e pop, que ele ouvia. Isso foi um Mix eclético que passou pelo funk de Cameo, Earth, Wind & Fire, George Clinton e Rick James ao rock do U2, INXS e Depeche Mode, dando nome às canções quando suas gravações que eram feitas com um conjunto de dezessete vozes alcançaram o selo GospoCentric, através de Vick Mack Lataillade, que assinou um contrato com Franklin imediatamente, tornando Kirk Franklin & The Family (também conhecido como Why We Sing) recorde de vendas.
